StagThe stag is an important symbol. In Western culture, because of its branching antlers that periodically renew themselves, it has long been considered the symbol of rejuvenation, rebirth, and the passage of time. In antiquity and Christian mythology, the stag was seen as protection from poisonous snakes: burned antlers were supposed to drive snakes away. Used on coats of arms, the stag symbolized greatness, power, and serenity. In Scandinavian mythology, the antlers of the stag were associated with the crown of the universal tree, Yggdrasil, or said to mirror the rays of the sun. In China, the stag is a symbol of wealth, because the word stag is pronounced similarly to the phrase good income. A picture with a civil servant accompanied by a stag means: "May fame and wealth be yours." More often, however, the stag is considered the god of long life and is thereby a symbol of longevity.
