RoseIn antiquity, the rose was the symbol of rebirth and of love that could reach beyond death. In Christianity, the rose has several different meanings. It is considered the symbol of the blood of the crucified, and therefore is the symbol of divine love. Five-petal roses have been carved in confessionals. The white rose, the queen of flowers, stands for Mary and virginity. In the Middle Ages, wreaths made from roses could be worn only by women who were still virgins. In literature, the rose to this day is still the flower of love. Alchemists believed that white and red roses stood for sulfur and mercury and were symbols of duality. A rose with seven petals is considered a symbol of the seven metals. Many fraternal organizations chose the rose as an expression of their spirituality-like the combination of a cross and the five-petal rose of the Rosicrucian Order. For the Masons, the rose is the symbol of secrecy, beauty, and virtue, and the expression of love, light, and life. Applications:
