Owl

The symbolism of the owl is mixed. People in the distant past perceived darkness as negative and dangerous, full of uncertainty, and therefore connected to evil and bad things. This bird of the night-unsocial, with a mournful call and silent flight - was considered a bad omen. The owl was seen as unpredictable and was thought to be the messenger of death.

On the other hand, its calming manner, large eyes, thoughtful and seemingly inward-looking gaze, and its extraordinary night vision made the owl the symbol of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and science. This might well be why some bookstores and publishers use the owl in their firm's logo as a symbol of erudition and wisdom.
