Mountain
The mountain has long been considered a symbol of the connecting point between heaven and earth, the place were we are nearest to God. A mountain is also a symbol of human ascent. Mountains are seen as rising above the condition of mortal human beings and therefore are a symbol of divine power. Many cultures and cities claim their own sacred mountains. They are perceived as an eerie and frightening passage to a superhuman, intimidating world. Pilgrims to sacred mountains have likened their journey to this higher spiritual plane to a step-by-step process of letting go of the concerns of everyday life. The ancient Chinese belief in the five sacred mountains, based on what they see as the five points of the compass (east, south, west, north, and the center), is still valued today. Since ancient times, the five mountains have been honored as places of sacrifice:
- in the east the T'ai-shan;
- in the south, the Southern Heng¬shan;
- in the center, the Sung-shan;
- in the west, the Hua-shan;
- in the north, the Northern Heng-shan.
All five mountains are covered with trees - a rarity in China-and several Taoist temples have been erected at the summit. Almost every mountain had its own mountain god. In the past, people believed that the souls of the dead lived in these mountains. Today, mountains are considered a symbol of the connection between heaven and earth, of wisdom, stability, and the slow and arduous ascent towards spiritual awareness. The trigram Keeping Still is expressed in feng shui through mountains. Applications:
- As a poster, painting, or photograph
- As a large boulder in the garden
- In the form of a crystal lamp to create a relaxed atmosphere.
