Lotus

The lotus flower is one of the most important symbolic plants in China. It is the symbol of innocence. It stands for Buddha's enlightenment and occupies a special place in the philosophy of Buddhism.

The lotus grows in muddy, marshy water, but it seems that in spite of this its flowers are brilliantly beautiful, which is why it is the symbol of immaculate beauty and virgin innocence in an unclean environment.

The lotus in China has two names, lien and ho. In Chinese, lien is pronounced like the words for "connecting," "loving," and "uninterrupted," but also "humility."

Ho stands for "unity." Together with other symbols, many plays on words are created. For instance, a young boy with a fish and a lotus next to him means: "May you have abundance, year after year." Two lotus plants are a symbol of marriage: sharing harmony and one heart.

In feng shui, the lotus is a favorite plant for a pond, because it is thought to bring good luck when in bloom. If it bears fruit, it means that the house will receive an abundance of good luck.
