Labyrinth

The labyrinth is one of the most important geomantic shapes. It should not be confused with an ordinary maze. A labyrinth is a one-way path that always ends at the center of the circle. Moving through a labyrinth collects the energy in this space and sets it free. It is the symbol of the human journey from birth to death and resurrection -w ith all its trials, tribulations, delays, and complications.

One very famous labyrinth is in the cathedral of Chartres, France. It measures 39 feet (12 m) in diameter.

The labyrinth was almost forgotten, but in the early 1970s many cities rediscovered labyrinths when they built new plazas and marketplaces. Designers used labyrinths to mark the center of a plaza. More and more garden and landscape architects are also using this motif in order to increase vitality and energy.

Applications:

  • In a garden, as a lawn design, with gravel or box trees
  • In entrance halls, with colorful flagstones
  • In larger buildings, as a focal point.
