Kitchen Feng Shui

Beijing

A good kitchen Feng Shui is vital to the health and welfare of the family; it can even be regarded as sacred.

In a similar spirit, our own mothers and grandmothers would severely reprimand us or chase us out to the dining room if we fooled around in their space, dirtied the stove (which is also known as the wealth generator in the household), made their floor messy, tinkered with their cooking pots while they were preparing a meal or upset the contents of the fridge.

Kitchen Feng Shui

  • Chi and Food The cook is responsible for nourishing the family, and this is where our blood and chi originates. Every thing you eat has its own chi energy field and, once this is inside you, it will have a subtle influence on your own Chi.
  • Decluttering In traditional Feng Shui, the kitchen was reasonably secluded and definitely off limits for pranksters and general traffic. All clutter in the kitchen should be cleared up at the earliest possible time.
  • The Stove Cooking is undoubtedly one of the highest expressions of love and cooks need a space where they can begin to create the health of the family in peace and quiet.

The kitchen therefore must have no 'through draught' of chi. An example of a through draught is where the front door faces the kitchen and the back door. The cook also needs to have a feeling of focus without distractions and therefore an ideal position for a cooker is away from the door.

  • Separate the Water Elements and Fire Element It is considered unwise to position water either opposite the cooker or adjacent to it. In this context, water means the sink but can also include the fridge, the deep freeze, the dishwasher or a washing machine. However, the first three are the most important.
