Feng Shui Bamboo

Feng Shui Bamboo

In China, Feng Shui bamboo has always been one of the most useful natural products. It is regarded as a symbol of longevity, endurance and protection.

Bamboo is a popular motif in Chinese calligraphy. It is considered as a good metaphor for humanity and life. A famous Chinese tradition says that the artist must become a bamboo tree before he can paint one.

Bamboo derives its Feng Shui symbolism from its characteristics:

  • Its trailing branches bow to the ground because its heart is empty. An empty heart is humble, which makes the bamboo tree a symbol of virtue.
  • The tree is compared to a noble master, because it never changes. The tree stands upright and proud through every season and the worst storms, always convinced of its power. It is a symbol of trust and permanence.
  • The tree is forever green and never changes. It is a symbol of long life.
  • When set on fire, bamboo branches explode with a loud boom which, people believed, could drive away thunderstorms. Bamboo trees were also considered messengers of the gods. For a long time, they were used for fireworks to greet the New Year and for other festivities, suggesting that at the conclusion calm and peace would return.
  • Since the words for "bamboo" and "prayer" sound alike in Chinese, bamboo shoots are also used during prayer ceremonies. A vase with bamboo branches can be used to increase the effectiveness of the prayer.
  • Bamboo, pine, and plum are the "three friends of the winter." Together they are the symbol of a long life.
  • In feng shui, bamboo is the symbol of the element Wood and therefore of growth and prosperity. When planting or bringing a bamboo plant into the house, provide enough fertilizer so that it can grow to its full splendor.

Applications:

  • As a fast-growing evergreen plant, bamboo trees or plants are excellent for diminishing negative influences of sharp edges and corners coming from buildings that face the house
  • Together with a pond (yin energy) in the garden, bamboo has good yang-balancing aspects
  • Inside the home, a bamboo plant is very effective in softening corners, reducing the loss of energy through large windows, and providing needed support for Wood or Fire people.
  • Place potted bamboo plants along the East side of the garden. This is the sector of wood element and is idea for placing the Feng Shui Bamboo
