Egg

This "egg" landmark is the National Opera in China.

In the south of China, legend has it that the egg brought forth the planet and all that is alive; after the great flood, however, the only survivors were two siblings. Finally the woman gave birth to an egg from which many children were hatched. The egg in China, as in Europe, is the symbol of fertility. During a wedding ceremony, an egg is given to the bride and groom in many different forms. Sick people are also given an egg as a gift that expresses the wish for a speedy recovery. A child on its first birthday is often given a soft-boiled egg. On New Year's day, red colored eggs are messengers of joy for the coming year.

Mythology tells several different versions of how the world was created. One is that our planet was born from an egg. Greek mythology tells that many heroes came from eggs. e.g., the twins Castor and Polydeuces. The egg was the result of the union of Leda and Zeus; Zeus took on the form of a swan in order to be near Leda. A story from South Korea tells that a person found an egg with a infant inside who became the leader of all tribes.

In China and India, the egg stands for the unity of heaven and earth. In Egypt, the ankh also recalls the idea of the cosmic egg, which became a Christian tradition in the form of the cross.

In the West, pagan spring rituals used the egg as a symbol of reawakened animal and plant life. Christianity sees the egg as the symbol of resurrection-Christ rose from his grave on Easter Sunday (like a chick breaking through the shell of the egg). In the Christian world, people have colored eggs as decorations and had egg-rolling contests on Easter Sunday.
