Colors and Feng Shui

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was the founder the physiology of color, and his teachings made colors a subject of importance and worthy of study. For him, colors were a testament to a higher order.Goethe not only explored the nature of colors, but also studied their effects on the human psyche. He noted: "Experience has shown that individual colors can influence a person's mood and disposition." This fact alone should challenge us to take advantage of the power of colors. The possibilities are endless, from tablecloths, curtains, and rugs to objects such as vases, bowls, flower arrangeŽments, pictures, paintings, sculptures, lampshades, art objects (both store-bought and homemade), and plants. Different ways of painting the walls of a room and the different shades we have available to us today provide many creative possibilities, inside and outside of the home. Feng shui provides guidelines on how to use colors according to the five feng shui elements and yin and yang, and gives information about the symbolism and dynamics of colors in general. A basic rule is that red and black should be used sparingly. Too much red creates aggressiveness and tension, and black can cause depression and pessimism.
