The Bagua

The bagua is a very effective and simple feng shui tool.

It is a grid or compass used to analyze the layout of a building or an area. It represents the eight vital areas based on the eight trigrams of the I Ching (Book of Changes).

According to ancient Chinese beliefs, this system contains all essential building blocks of the universe, from which all life flows. All cosmic qualities, objects, and elements can be described and analyzed by the eight trigrams.

In the Eight Aspirations System, the arrangement of the bagua areas corresponds to the eight trigrams of the I Ching, creating a direct connection between the trigram and the vital areas of human life.

A bagua compass makes a precise analysis of individual rooms of the home or of any other area-possible, providing a wealth of insight and making it possible to draw conclusions about lifestyle and quality of life.

The goal of feng shui is to create a balance between the different ba gua areas and thereby bring harmony, peace, and health to your life.

Besides the Eight Aspirations Feng Shui System, another widely used ba gua systems is the Tibetan Black Hat Feng Shui System. As the name implies, the starting point is a door. It may be a gate through which you enter a garden, an entrance door into the house, or a door entering a room. The entrance door is the opening through which energy enters a home, and is often referred to as the "gate of chi." This makes it particularly important, if a house has several entrances or a room has several doors, to determine which is the main entrance.

Transfer the bagua to a room

To transfer the grid to a building or room, it is necessary to mentally divide the space under consideration into nine equal sections or squares.

Draw a sketch on paper of the room or building and divide the length with two horizontal lines and the width with 2 vertical lines to make a grid system.

The results are nine areas of equal size in which each box represents one-ninth of the total area.

The center square is considered the tai chi -the center-representing everything and nothing, and it is not part of the eight vital areas.

When the grid is used, we see that the entrance is either in the Knowledge, Career, or the Supportive Friends area. The wall along which the door is located is considered the baseline from which the rest of the squares are determined.

The grid can be used for any type of space: a piece of property, a room, a house, an apartment-even a desk.

A tip for using the grid: Hold the grid in front of you and stand in the doorway. Imagine that the room is divided into a grid of nine squares. The Wealth area will always be at the upper left square and the Marriage area at the upper right, for example. It does not matter if the entrance to the room is on the right side, left side, or in the middle.
